Utumno: The Dark Fortress of Melkor

Utumno, the first and greatest fortress of Melkor, was strategically established in the furthest reaches of the northern regions of Arda, beneath the mighty Iron Mountains. The fortress's location was chosen specifically for its remoteness from the lands where the other Valar dwelt in the south, allowing Melkor to build his strength in secret.

The construction of Utumno began during the Spring of Arda, in the time before the Valar raised the Two Lamps, Illuin and Ormal. This period marked the earliest stages of Arda's formation, when the world was still being shaped and the Valar were establishing their first domains across the vast lands.

As the first major fortress ever constructed in the history of Arda, Utumno represented a significant turning point in the shaping of the world. Its creation marked the beginning of organized evil in Middle-earth, as it served as the template for all future dark strongholds that would follow in later ages.

The fortress of Utumno consisted of an immense network of underground passages, chambers, and great halls that delved deep into the foundations of the earth.
